Cannon Gets College Hall Call
Oakland Raiders Legend Billy Cannon has been selected to the 2008 class for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame. The Raiders acquired Cannon in a 1964 trade and moved him from running back to tight end, where he made an immediate impact on the Silver and Black with his physical play and excellent hands.
After making the conversion to tight end with the Raiders, Cannon, the top overall pick in the 1960 draft, became one of the league’s best at that position.
In 1967, Cannon scored 10 touchdowns and was an All-American Football League tight end while helping the Raiders capture the American Football League championship and earn a spot as the AFL representative in Super Bowl II. In 1969, he was the starting tight end in the AFL All-Star Game. Cannon scored 64 touchdowns as a pro, 47 receiving.
Cannon, the only player in LSU history to have his number retired, had incredible success throughout his three-year collegiate career while playing halfback at LSU. In 1958, he led his school to a perfect season and first college football National Championship.
The 1959 Heisman Trophy winner rushed for 1,867 yards, returned 31 punts for 349 yards, and caught 31 passes during his college career. He was also served a punter for the Tigers. Cannon was a First Team All-America choice in 1958 and 1959.
Cannon is one of 20 players who played the entire 10 years of the American Football League. He has practiced dentistry since retiring from football.
A total of 13 players and two coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) were selected for this year's Hall of Fame class. The 2008 Class will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at The National Football Foundation's Annual Awards Dinner on December 9 in New York and will be officially enshrined at the Hall in South Bend, Indiana in the summer of 2009.
