The members of my primary fantasy league have been discussing Adrian Peterson.
We've been trying to figure out which great back from the past AP most resembles in running style. There's no real consensus, but a name that's come up is Gale Sayers.
At this point I feel obligated to add that the guys in my league aren't quite old enough to remember seeing Sayers perform. We're just going by the old-timey video.
Anyway, while Adrian Peterson has been tremendous as a rookie, he's hardly the only productive first-year player out there. Calvin Johnson, Marshawn Lynch and Dwayne Bowe have all proven to be fantasy-worthy. And as we head into the second half of the season, other rookies could emerge.
Here are five more first-year players who could eventually help your team:
• John Beck, quarterback, Miami -- Logic dictates that the winless Dolphins will give their second-round pick a chance to start, perhaps as soon as after the team's Week 9 bye. Besides his lack of experience, Beck won't have an offensive line, any name receivers or Ronnie Brown to help him. But you never know. Miami does play Buffalo twice, the Jets and Cincinnati in the final eight weeks.
• Zach Miller, tight end, Oakland -- Half of Miller's 14 receptions, along with his first NFL touchdown, have come in the past two weeks. Whether Daunte Culpepper remains the starter or eventually gives way to first overall pick JaMarcus Russell, Miller should keep getting looks.
• Selvin Young, running back, Denver -- Travis Henry isn't suspended yet, but he isn't healthy either. Don't be surprised if Young starts Monday against Green Bay.
• Chris Henry, running back, Tennessee -- LenDale White went for 104 yards last week against Houston, but he's only averaging 3.3 yards per carry for the season. Henry, meanwhile, ran 11 times for 57 yards and a touchdown against the Texans in his pro debut. He remains the third-stringer behind White and Chris Brown, who may play this week, but I'd stash Henry. In the the final six weeks, the Titans face Cincinnati, Houston and the Jets.
• Michael Bush, running back, Oakland -- There's a small chance that Michael Bush, who's still rehabbing the right leg he broke in 2006 while at Louisville, could see the field this season. The Oakland Raiders have until Nov. 5 to activate Michael Bush, put him on injured reserve or release him. IR seems like the best bet right now.
Touchdown guarantee
Last week I gave you Roddy White, who not only scored but topped 100 receiving yards. But in hindsight, I should have suggested Kenny Watson. Rudi Johnson's replacement rushed for three scores against the Jets, who can't stop anyone. Watson will apparently start again this week, but don't expect a repeat performance against the Steelers, who've allowed only one rushing touchdown so far.
Those Jets, however, are certainly capable of a repeat performance. So this week's guarantee is Buffalo's Lee Evans, who takes on a New York defense that isn't much better against the pass than it is the run. Evans hasn't scored this season, but he did get 98 yards against Baltimore last week. Even if he doesn't come through this Sunday, keep riding the ex-Badger -- Buffalo's next two opponents are Cincinnati and Miami. Evans' hugely disappointing season is headed for an upturn.
