Oak-Town Overhaul
Leading up to the start of Training Camps in July, we are taking a team-by-team tour with fantasy previews for each NFL squad. We'll detail the key offseason moves, position battles to watch, and other things to keep an eye on as the clubs prepare for the season ahead.
Notable Offseason Moves: The Raiders introduced Lane Kiffin as the 16th head coach in franchise history. Within a week of taking the job, Kiffin was reportedly on the receiving end of a tongue lashing delivered by disgruntled wide receiver Randy Moss. Kiffin let his team know who was in charge by trading Moss. Also at the draft, the Raiders used the first overall pick on quarterback JaMarcus Russell. They also acquired Josh McCown via trade with the Lions to take the snaps until the rookie is ready. Although Kiffin couldn't make things work with Moss, he is giving Jerry Porter a second chance. For that matter, he is trying to resurrect the career of Mike Williams, who was also acquired via trade with the Lions. Running back Dominic Rhodes was signed as a free agent to lighten the workload on starter LaMont Jordan. Likewise, the team selected rookie rusher Michael Bush in the fourth-round of the draft.
Position Battles: JaMarcus Russell and McCown will compete for playing time this summer. While there is no disputing the fact that JaMarcus Russell is the long-term answer, it remains to be seen whether he can catch on quickly enough to earn the Week 1 start. Jordan has been penciled in as the starter, but Kiffin has stated that he envisions Jordan and Rhodes serving as his version of Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush. Unfortunately, Rhodes was issued a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Michael Bush would have been a first-round draft pick had he not suffered a serious leg injury last year. It remains to be seen whether he'll be physically ready for training camp. Rookie tight end Zach Miller was added via a second-round draft pick and could push starter Courtney Miller.
Keep an Eye On: As if JaMarcus Russell doesn't have enough to worry about in terms of learning the offense and competing for a starting job, he also has to question whether Porter can turn his career around. After averaging 970 yards and seven touchdowns in 2004 and 2005, Porter landed in former head coach Art Shell's doghouse last year and was limited to only one reception. Obviously, we'll be watching closely to see whether JaMarcus Russell or McCown earns the starting job, as well as how Rhodes factors in now that the coaches know he'll miss the first four games of the season.
