Shawn's Corner: 2007 Heisman Trophy Race Preview
Because my specialties include not just the NFL and the NFL Draft, but college football as well, I have decided to preview the 2007 Heisman race. This year's race has one front runner: a runningback by the name of Darren McFadden.
The offseason is always long. The fans feel it, the media feel it, and the coaches and players feel it. Over the next few months I'll do my best to keep everyone informed and excited for the 2007 football season. Because my specialties include not just the NFL and the NFL Draft, but college football as well, I have decided to preview the 2007 Heisman race. There is one player that stands out from the rest at this point: a runningback by the name of Darren McFadden.
The Heisman Trophy
The Heisman Trophy presentation is always a nice way to conclude the regular season. You will likely see some of the most victorious players in the contest, such as Troy Smith from 2006 and Reggie Bush from 2005, who both played in their respective year's National Championship game. Ironically, they both ended up losing. Because of that, you will want to look at some of top teams for this coming season: USC, Michigan, Ohio State, Arkansas, Texas, West Virginia, and Louisville.
From USC, the most noticeable name would be quarterback John David Booty. Although I am not as high on him, the media seems to be in love with the guy. An interesting fact: This year will be the 50 year anniversary of John David Crow's Heisman year for Texas A&M. If John David Booty were to make a serious run for the trophy, you can guarantee that these two would be linked in a story or two.
Michigan, whose offense may be the best in college football this year, will have a few candidates. At quarterback, Chad Henne will likely be one of the top contenders. Henne's backfield partner, runningback Mike Hart, is a fan favorite and should draw some considerable interest. Hart placed fifth in last year's Heisman voting. At wide receiver, Mario Manningham will likely catch some people's eyes.
Ohio State won't draw as much interest from an offensive perspective, but on defense, James Laurinaitis will definitely have a shot if he has the season that many people, including the Ohio State coaching staff, thinks that he will have. There is talk coming out of Columbus that Laurinaitis will have a shot at the Heisman.
Arkansas will feature the best runningback in college football this season, Darren McFadden. Darren McFadden finished second in the Heisman voting last season, just behind Troy Smith and ahead of Notre Dame's Brady Quinn. Both Troy Smith and Brady Quinn have been left for the NFL, meaning Darren McFadden has to be the favorite at this point.
Texas has one of my favorite players in all of college football, runningback Jamaal Charles. As a freshman, Charles played in all 13 games, including three starts, while rushing for 878 yards and 11 TD's on 119 carries. As a sophomore, he appeared in 12 games, starting one, and led the Longhorns with 831 rushing yards on 156 carries and seven TDs. With Selvin Young out of his way, I think that he is poised for a tremendous season. Charles is one of the fastest players in all of college football, and should come in as the starter at runningback. Because they run the spread offense, Texas's quarterback Colt McCoy should put up the numbers to be mentioned as a candidate.
West Virginia likely has two of the most intriguing players in this year's Heisman race. Quarterback Pat White and runningback Steve Slaton form one of the most dangerous duos in all of college football. With their combined speed and agility, they will both be fan favorites to contend for this year's Heisman. Slaton placed fourth in last year's Heisman voting.
Another favorite for this year's Heisman trophy would have to be Louisville's Brian Brohm. Brian Brohm is arguably the best quarterback in college football this season. Although he lost his backfield partners in runningbacks Michael Bush and Kolby Smith, he will return two solid wide receivers. Wide receivers Mario Urrutia and Harry Douglas should both provide Brian Brohm with the weapons that he needs to become of the elite players in this year's Heisman race.

In short, Raiders need to play it safe with Russell start in training camp and the preseason, checking the ball down to the likes of Darren McFadden and Michael Bush, or finding Zach Miller or John Madsen over the middle, seems like the wisest course of action. Besides leaning hard on the running game,
