Caution is key with Michael Bush
The Oakland Raiders were ranked 29th in the league in rushing last season. Justin Fargas, the fourth-year tailback out of USC, enjoyed a career year and led the team with 178 carries for 659 yards and a touchdown. His battery mate in the Oakland backfield, six-year veteran LaMont Jordan, added 434 yards and a pair of scores on 114 carries.
Clearly, the tandem won't win any awards for such production, and while the Oakland Raiders were a better running team than they were passing last season, that isn't exactly saying much.
The good news? Help is on the way in fourth-round pick Michael Bush. The bad news? Michael Bush might not be good to go until 2008. However, he'll certainly be worth the wait.
Entering last season, the ex-Louisville Cardinals running back had gained 2,386 yards on 418 carries, scoring 36 touchdowns and averaging 5.7 yards per rush over the first three years of his collegiate career. Michael Bush was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team in 2003, was second on the team in rushing as a sophomore, and brought home first-team All-Big East honors after leading the conference in rushing and all-purpose yards (not to mention setting a Louisville school record for rushing touchdowns and leading the NCAA in scoring with a 14.4 points per game average) in 2005.
Then it happened. Michael Bush broke his right tibia in the first game of the 2006 season after a stellar first-half performance against Kentucky that saw him rush for 128 yards. That injury would end his career with the Cardinals.
On Sept. 4, he had a rod inserted into the broken leg. That injury was the sole reason Michael Bush fell in the draft, despite reports that doctors had proclaimed him ready for action. The 6-foot-3, 247-pound runner was widely considered to be a top preseason Heisman Trophy candidate in 2006. He has excellent breakaway speed and is powerful enough to break tackles. At least, he was before the injury; and if the 4.62 40-yard dash Michael Bush ran at the NFL combine is any indication, he should be again.
Michael Bush can be a great NFL running back. The key for the Oakland Raiders is not to rush him. His injury was a severe one, and Oakland has been experimenting with a new zone-blocking scheme this offseason. Those two factors could lead the Oakland Raiders to believe that Michael Bush should play sparingly, if at all, during his rookie season.
The Oakland Raiders should give Michael Bush's leg time to heal while also giving the offensive line the chance to master coach Tom Cable's new approach to run blocking. Michael Bush has all the tools to be the running back of the future for the Oakland Raiders, and quite possibly a fixture at the Pro Bowl.
Despite his doctor's proclamation that Michael Bush is good to go, it would be foolish for the Oakland Raiders to throw him right into the mix.

In short, Raiders need to play it safe with Russell start in training camp and the preseason, checking the ball down to the likes of Darren McFadden and Michael Bush, or finding Zach Miller or John Madsen over the middle, seems like the wisest course of action. Besides leaning hard on the running game,
