Michael Bush could only sit and watch from a cart as his former University of Louisville football teammates worked out for pro scouts today at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.
Michael Bush had a second surgery on his right leg last Tuesday, the same leg he broke in the season opener against Kentucky last September. That puts his NFL Draft status even more up in the air, but the running back is maintaining a positive attitude.
“It’s a gamble,” he said of any team that would take him. “But in my mind it’s a good gamble. If you talk to anybody from Louisville, any of my coaches or anybody who has watched me play, you’ll know it’s a future investment.”
Michael Bush said he learned he would need a second titanium rod inserted into the leg at last month’s NFL combine, after he was examined by several team doctors. He has been told it will take two months to recover.
“It’s not a setback at all,” he said. “The doctors all say I could have not put in the two rods and see if it would heal in two months, or I could put it in and it would heal in two months. Basically if I didn’t put it in and it didn’t heal, I’d be wasting time.
“They say I’ll be ready in July, so I’ll take their word for it. It feels good right now. I had surgery on six days ago and I’m already walking without crutches, so I think everything is pretty good.”
Michael Bush had been working out in Arizona before the combine. He said he was 261 pounds when he left Louisville, weighed in at 243 at the combine and checked in at 238 today.
The former Male High School star has stayed upbeat ever since the injury and plans to keep doing that.
“I’m not going to force the issue,” he said. “I’ve been out six months, so two more won’t kill me.”
